Jefferson Station

Jefferson Station

Join our photo lessons at the Jefferson Station, which is one of the excellent locales in the rotation of many Philadelphia venues that offer terrific photo opportunities.

Venue Description:

Capture the energy of downtown Philadelphia at Jefferson Station, one of SEPTA’s busiest transportation hubs. With long platforms, busy corridors, stairways, trains, and modern architecture, the station offers a variety of opportunities to practice both architectural and street photography. The mix of strong lines, changing light, and constant movement makes it an exciting place to build your photography skills.

Throughout the workshop, students may photograph platforms, tracks, hallways, and entrances while practicing leading lines, perspective, and depth. Your instructor may show how train tracks, platform edges, or long corridors naturally guide the viewer’s eye through a photo, and how changing your camera height or position can create a stronger sense of distance and scale.

The station is also a great place to practice street photography. Students may learn how to use people to add movement and tell a story, such as waiting for a commuter to walk into the perfect spot instead of chasing the moment. Your instructor may also demonstrate how a simple background or good lighting can help a subject stand out.

Jefferson Station’s repeating columns, escalators, and rows of lights also make it ideal for practicing symmetry, framing, and repetition. Students may experiment with centering a hallway for a balanced composition or using doorways and railings to naturally frame a subject. Throughout the session, students will learn how small changes in composition, timing, and light can turn everyday scenes into compelling photographs.
