Finally, a Snowdrop. After an unusually cold winter with two bad snowstorms, the spring flowers were taking their time emerging. We had to travel to Baltimore to see them, but there they were. After all that harshness and cruelty, their delicate fragility and firm perseverance was a little treasure, worthy of kneeling before.

Winter Photos

This has felt like a long winter, what with one thing and another. At times it has been hard to be motivated to go out and find the beauty in photographs. Certainly, after a fresh snowfall, once the shoveling has been done, there is beauty abounding, but, at least where I live, that can be a once or twice thing in the winter and the rest of the time, the world seems a bit colorless and bleak. But that should not stop you – there is beauty to be found there too.

For one thing, I am often intrigued by the details of the land that is exposed when the foliage is gone. In this photo, the bridge and the house all but disappear into the greenery in mid-summer

There might not be any flowers, but the remnants of the summer before can still be worth lingering over.

And on those days when it is warm enough to be damp and misty, little jewels can be revealed.

Or, dreamy vistas can open up.

The bleakness can be a natural for intriguing or dramatic black-and-white photos.

And do not let the bleakness fool you into thinking there is no color in winter scenery.

So, now that winter seems to be receding, celebrate a little with those spring flowers, but when it makes an unexpected brief return, celebrate that too.
