Los Angeles Photo Workshops

Join a Digital Photo Academy teacher for Los Angeles photo workshops, small group or private live sessions. You’ll learn all about your camera controls and how to create powerful images.

Click here for full calendar of live workshops

This section is devoted to the Los Angeles area and the teachers who lead these workshops. Because they are professional photographers who have lived in Los Angeles for 10 years or longer, you benefit.

Also these pro shooters have teaching know-how and love teaching Los Angeles photo workshops. (Not all photographers do.) And they know the local retailers where you can get the better deals on photo equipment. Thus, they know where the best photo shots are. So, this allows us to provide you with a range of interesting places to shoot.

Also, classes are scheduled through the year, whether indoors or outdoors, winter, spring, summer of fall. And sometimes, one time of day to shoot is better than another, and our teachers keep us informed.

About our Los Angeles Photo Workshop Venues

Often, the teachers even have private access to various venues in the city where they live. Themes and locales for our Los Angeles photo workshops vary from street photography and buildings, to flowers and landscapes. Thus, you’ll photograph water scenes, sunsets, lush scenery and everything in between.

During one month, meet up in the natural light streaming in to a religious venue via lovely stained glass windows. Then, the following month, it might be a small, little-known park with very special landscapes.

Plus, shoot scenic Pacific beaches such as Venice Beach, Long Beach or other landscape or water settings.

Here’s a recent video of our pro instructor Scott Crawford’s photo workshops at Laguna Beach!

And enjoy sunset shoot and light painting at Ascot Hills. So, capture the essence of iconic Los Angeles street scenes in venues such as Hollywood Boulevard and Chinatown.

Also we offer a special discount to people who attend more than one workshop. So sign up for both classes!

Thus we arrange these classes to provide variety for the students in each local market. However, we could not do it without the skills and connections provided by the teachers in each of those markets.

So phone the national HQ of Digital Photo Academy at 1 877 372 2231. Also, each of the Digital Photo Academy markets includes a local office. Thus in Los Angeles, that office is at:

4741 Ellenwood Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90041-2950

E-MAIL US AT [email protected]. OR CALL 1-877-372-2231. ALSO, click here TO LEARN ABOUT OUR PRIVATE ALL DAY OR HALF DAY CLASS

ASK ABOUT OUR BACK-TO-BACK SAME DAY WORKSHOP OFFER WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO PAY $150 TOTAL, $65 LESS THAN IF YOU TOOK THE CLASSES ON SEPARATE DAYS.  THIS STARTS WITH A SIT-DOWN SESSION FOLLOWED BY A 3-HOUR DEMONSTRATION PHOTO SHOOT, LED BY A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER.

Comments to “Los Angeles”

  1. The workshop went great! The Disney Concert hall was definitely a much nicer area than Hollywood boulevard. Ming was awesome!

    Thanks so much,
    BH

  2. Scott was great. I have not downloaded the pics, but I will send a couple when I do.

    • Scott is a great instructor. He’s thorough, patient, and rolls with the punches. I ran out of battery and it was no big deal. We just moved onto the cell phone cameras. I will be taking more classes with him.

  3. The photo outing was enjoyable, educational and entertaining Can we do an online Zoom photo critique for the remaining time? I will post approximately 15 from today beforehand. I am available almost every day from 2 PM until 9 PM.

Hans was extremely helpful with camera settings plus lighting, subjects and composition during the street shooting portion. Some results are posted at http://www.nsapc.com/hollywood21 . (The blur of people was intentional to depict their motion ).

  4. The DPA team has to coordinate the DPA workshops across the whole country; which I imagine entails a lot of names. Your national office team members and the folks who teach where they live do a wonderful job. That’s why I keep coming back!

  5. I enjoyed the class and I learned a lot. As a beginner, the information is overwhelming, but Scott was informative and knowledgeable. He was really helpful in teaching me how to shoot the animals I will see on the safari.

I went to Samys Camera today and bought the lens Scott suggested. The comment from the sales person was, your instructor knew what he was doing. I would recommend Scott for the class. I would take more, however I am returning to Australia on Saturday.

    Thank you.
    Danielle McPherson

  6. Ming is a terrific teacher; I got exactly what I wanted from this class and enjoyed every minute.

  7. I really enjoyed yesterday’s session and learned a lot from Scott. Thank you.

  8. Looking for a digital photography class that would help me learn how to use my new Leica, I gained a rich, knowledgeable experience with Scott Crawford from Digital Photo Academy. And let me tell you, I am truly a beginner! But other camera classes I looked into were like one-hour, online demonstrations (which I could get on any Youtube video). I needed to physically do it to remember it! Key to my excellent experience was immediately putting into practice what I learned and Scott chose the perfect place—Manhattan Beach Pier. First he walked me through the different functions on my Leica, and then we wasted no time moving from photographing a life guard tower to bike riders, and then onto the pier to capture the shapes and patterns that make photos interesting. This way I understood why I moved the aperture and/or shutter speed to either capture a cyclist or adjust to bright light or even compose a frame using the value of thirds or consider the depth of field in what I wanted to focus on and what I wanted to blur. He even showed me how to capture the glassy look of water—yes, there is a technique to that! I was truly impressed! What really topped off the day was watching Scott express his joy of photography. “Don’t miss the shot”, he’d say. “Have your camera ready…” We all know, when someone loves their subject, learning is always more fun! I look forward to next time Scott teaches so I can continue to grow in my ability and confidence to take pictures.

BTW: I don’t usually write reviews, but Scott and Digital Photo deserved my time.

  9. I truly value the learning opportunities your photography lessons offer.

The class expanded my understanding of different techniques and perspectives. I left the session feeling inspired and motivated. Scott created a positive and engaging learning environment.

Your generosity and dedication truly sets your organization apart. Wishing your continued success in all your endeavors

  10. Really enjoyed the experience. Learning the controls and navigating the camera was what I wanted to accomplish by taking the course. Adding the next session which allowed me to experiment and apply techniques learned from the previous session was most beneficial to better understand the different aspects of the camera.

  11. It went well! I had so much fun and everyone including Scott was so encouraging. Looking foward to taking more classes as my schedule allows.

  12. Hey, that was an amazing class, your instructor Scott is a very nice guy and talented as well. I really appreciate it. I look forward to more meetings. I had to leave early to go deal with some family things.

  13. I found my time with Ming to be engaging, informative, and helpful.

  14. The session with Scott was awesome! I really enjoyed the time and got some great photos! So far I have only had time to briefly look at them but hope to spend some time and do some editing. If we are back in the LA area I would certainly look to organize our itinerary to spend time with Scott!

I like the idea of a photo book for our granddaughter!

Thank you for facilitating the the experience!

  15. THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERTISE!

    – Lyssandra

  16. Scott is a great instructor. He was very clear and explained everything really well. I am so glad I took his class. So much so I stayed for the next class, on composition. Had a great time and learned so much. I am looking forward to taking more classes at the Digital Photography Academy.

    – Maria L

  17. Wonderful instructor and a great learning experience. I highly recommend the course.

    – Daniel N

  18. Such a fun course full of ideas and scenarios to try out. I learned so much from Scott about composition and technicals, like how to best use shutter priority or aperture priority, exposure compensation, etc. Really had such an amazing set of moments. If I could do a first-time class all over again, it would be this one.

    – Eric Wang

  19. Thanks for the opportunity to learn a little bit more about photography yesterday.

It was very educational…Well, I took a few pictures with my camera and my phone.

    -Sung

  20. Had so much fun! Will book again soon!! Scott was great. Learned so much!

  21. Scott is a great instructor. He was very clear and explained everything really well. I am so glad I took his class. So much so I stayed for the next class, on composition. Had a great time and learned so much. I am looking forward to taking more classes at the Digital Photography Academy

  22. Had an awesome time! Too bad I had to leave early the sky really developed into a pretty out real red, moody, cloudy, beauty! I still managed to take a few bangers!

  23. Super fun time on Saturday. Really appreciate the location and scouting info. Scott was very warm and friendly and provided us lots of tips and ideas. He encouraged me to take some shots I wouldn’t have taken because I didn’t think they’d be that great. Turns out, the shots developed in to a pleasant surprise. Be enclosed a few shots. Hope you enjoy!

  24. It was the best class! I had the best time and picked up numerous photography tips and tricks! I’m still in Cloud 9 three days after taking Scott’s class. I’ve taken a couple of DPA classes before and I’ve enjoyed all of them, but I got most out of Scott’s class. Scott was so attentive and truly has the passion to teach. I did not hesitate asking questions. I would love to take more classes with him—and yes, I will even get up at the crack of dawn to take his classes. I loved the unexpected hike to the spot to get the perfect shot! I can’t wait to go back.

  25. I enjoyed my time spent with Ming. Thanks for connecting us and for the link to the FB group:-)

  26. Thank you again Scott. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot of new things. This was my first time in Chinatown. So the photography introduction was very nice.

  27. He took us to hidden gem in the neighborhood of LA where we can see buildings in DTLA and Dodgers stadium. I find it to be very insightful especially for my first photography class. Definitely considering his other workshops in the future

  28. Hey Scott,

Here is what I came up with, the 1st one is HDR merge (5pics) then used camera raw to make adjs. The 2nd one made adjs through LR. The other thing that I learned was how dirty my lenses are and need to get them clean.

I will be looking to see if I can make the L.A Skyline.

  29. Thanks for the follow up email – I enjoyed the session and picked up some items to help with my photography. I will definitely check out the other upcoming sessions.
    Here is my contribution:

  30. Just wanted to tell you what a fun class that was yesterday, Scott is a great instructor! I’m enthusiastic again about honing my skills further and look forward to taking more classes.

    • I’d take any of his classes again, he’s so energetic!

  31. Awesome, thank you so much! This is a huge help.

Might want to do one more session before I go. I’ll be in touch. I don’t leave for another month. Thanks so much for all your help and guidance. Love some of my photos. I can’t believe the luck we had with the last minute sunset and the bike riders. Super fun. I learned a lot.

Love your idea about a photoshop help session. I bet you can teach me so much with that too. Maybe we can shoot one ore time before my trip and do photoshop after. Just a thought.

Thanks again for everything. Have a great day .

  32. Thank you again Scott for an awesome class! We definitely learned a lot and I will definitely be getting a lighter weight tripod!

  33. Jeromy is a wonderful teacher. My skills are limited and he has a kind and considerate way of explaining things in an easy and simple way without judgement. I will definitely take another class 🙂

  34. Jeromy was knowledgable and chose a great location to shoot in! I learned a lot, it was great fun and I would highly recommend it!

  35. Hi Richard, Thanks so much for the follow up. Today’s class was more than I could have ever expected. I went in barely even knowing how to turn on my digital camera and while I am still no expert, I left with more knowledge & skill than I ever anticipated. Jen did an amazing job from the very beginning with the “Master Your Camera Controls” workshop. I’m so happy I decided to book this last minute. I gained a wealth of knowledge with hands on experience & was well prepared for the in the field session immediately following. I walked away with even more curiosity for photography and images I am pretty happy with 😊 I am attaching a few to this email. Thank you both again! Jen – you were phenomenal. THANK YOU 😊

    -Rochelle Baum

  36. “Jeromy is an excellent photographer and teacher. The one-on-one setup of the course makes it easy to ask specific questions and get detailed answers that you can learn and practice hands-on— everything from camera settings to shooting techniques and more. I would recommend this course to photographers of varying backgrounds and skill levels.”

    -Rob

  37. “Jennifer thank you so much for the awesome class again. You did a great job and I’ve learned a lot from you. Also thanks for your advice on how to find the intention of the shot.”

    -Janet

    Gilbert Magno

  41. Jennifer was a great teacher yesterday during our Camera Controls and Chinatown Composition in the field class in Chinatown. Jennifer was very knowledgeable and patient with all of us students. I hope that you will be putting on a night time class in Downtown LA or Hollywood. That is a class I would totally sign up for.

    Lysa Takacs

  42. Hey Jennifer,

Thank you for a great class. I look forward to the next one with you.

I did a lot of post to deal with the stark black/white contrast. My goal was to capture both his cool and his expertise.

    Ellen

  43. I really enjoyed the photo workshop at Venice Beach today. Jennifer is awesome! I learned a few new tricks using my camera in manual mode (rather than the easy auto mode). I enclose a few photos from our session. I’m pleased with them.

    Thanks again,
    Gail Hamilton

Thank you so much for your personalized attention and patience with my developing photography skills. 54. “It was very nice to meet you. Thank you very much for a very informative class. I enjoyed it very much.
If you haven’t deleted the picture you took of me at the beginning of the class, can I please have a copy? I especially liked the one with the light coming from behind (with halo around my hair). I may use it for my FB profile pic.

    Thanks very much again.
    Best regards,”

    -Setsuko

  55. “You’re an amazing instructor. If you decide to have photography classes or meet and greets in the future, I’d love to come. I’ll send you a link to some of the photos I was able to capture.

  56. “I had a great time – and learnt a tremendous amount from Ron! Thank you so much.”

    -Dallen Stanford

  57. “Loved the class..!!
Mr Talley has wonderful passion for photography!
    Thank you !!

    peace+love”
    -Peri

  58. “Ron was informative and knowledgable about photography. He was able to understand and answer all questions. I liked his tips about taking pictures of people. The new meeting place away from Graumann’s was a good idea, but with the group on the sidewalk and people continually walking thru the group it was a bit distracting. This is a good course for beginning photographers.”

    -Erle Collins

  59. “I just wanted to tell you I had a great time yesterday in the Composition in the field class.
I have a lot to learn about photography, but the instructor Ron Talley really made the class enjoyable.
I told several of my friends about the class today.

Here are some of my shots from yesterday and my practicing today.

    Thanks again for your help.”

    -Linda

  60. “I have to say that my experience was no less than 5 star! I appreciated how you created the situation for me, based on the limited attendance factor. Ron was amazing! His experience and passion for photography was just off the charts! I simply wanted to learn my new point and shoot camera, and it was so much more, and the Hollywood Blvd. trip was very fun, along with meeting a few new people!”

    – Student Laura

  61. “I joined Ron Talley this weekend to shoot in Hollywood. It was a beautiful day, a friendly group, and Ron was a terrific instructor. I will share my positive experience with other photographer friends to sign up for a class. I will also check out your offerings in L.A. And other cities I may travel to this year.

Love the resource you shared. Concise, well presented and all points Ron covered that I need to remember.”

    – Student Vicki Kane

  62. “Thank you for offering this class, I learned alot today working with Michael Baker, he is an outstanding teacher.”

    – Armen K.

  63. “Thanks for such a great class! I enjoyed myself down to the last picture of the day (which happened to be the best picture of the day)!

It was also a great pleasure to meet Rich & Maria!

    Thanks for a great day!”

    – Shanna

  64. “I enjoyed my experience. Jimmy brought the group back together every 20-30 min and reviewed everyone’s photos and gave advice. I will look into more classes with Jimmy. He was informative and down to earth.”

    -David

  67. “Thanks for the class today. I took a lot of photos!”

    – David Langston

  68. “First off thank you so much for your time to teach. Teaching especially in the arts is a career that I feel most people under value, but you are amazing at what you do and people should recognize all the work that you do.”

    – Ashley Staudenmeir

  69. “I had a wonderful time at the Hollywood Blvd class in Los Angeles. My class was Sunday 3-6 pm with Hans Gutknecht. Hans is very personable and engaging. He makes everything fun while imparting lots of information. It was a real photo expedition with a real photojournalist. My camera and composition skills increase more than I expected in a 3 hour class. I learn to shoot in aperture priority, use exposure compensation, how to be patient and look for the light, etc. I have lots to digest and practice. Thanks DPA. You are a first class organization.”

    – Tony Mataras

  70. “I was in Hans’ class on Sunday at 3p at Hollywood & Highland. I had a blast! I learned so much and feel like I have a much better grasp at the functionality on my Canon T3i Rebel. I’m no longer afraid of the “manual” setting!

Hans did a great job and I look forward to taking more classes at the Digital Academy and reaching out to Hans with any questions that I have as I use my Canon down the road.

    Thanks so much!”

    – Luz Elena

  71. “We had a fantastic experience and a fantastic time with our instructor Hans Gutknecht”

    – Andy Waldbaum

  72. “I had such a wonderful time listening and learning from the “pros”.I learned a lot. While on vacation last month I really thought about what I learned and applied it while shooting. Personally I think my photos are much better than what they used to be.”

    – Lill Gaimari
