City Center

It was in the 1680’s when William Penn worked a land grant from King Charles II, between the Delaware River and the Schuylkill, from Vine Street to South Street. Center City today, the 3rd most populated downtown center in the country, presents a rich variety of photographic opportunity with historical architecture of old row houses and grand hotels preserved on the National Historical Register, all peppered with modern skyscrapers for a study in contrasts. In this storied community the world’s most well-to-do travel the sidewalks along side the hard luck down and outers. To observe is a heady experience and new DPA Instructor will lead the way in capturing their stories with your camera, from a bride in white, crossing the Avenue, to a silhouetted statue presented at its best through the art of Depth of Field techniques

And if it gets too blustery in the wintery winds, Phil is on the inside track of every hotel, church and historic building in the area thanks to 20+ years of commercial, editorial and wedding shoots under his belt. In addition to ample time for photographing the grand exteriors, there will be lessons of interior details and ambient indoor lighting. With choices that include the Bellevue Hotel, Union League, Ritz Carlton and others you will have shooting time of the majestic Carpenter Room with grand archways and vaulted ceilings as well as The Rose Room, an intimate ball room with flourishes of charm for a lesson in natural lighting that streams in from the windows that stand more than 20 feet high.

Hone your skills in various focal lengths as you encounter the plazas that buttress the historic buildings and learn to create studies of unknowing models with a long lens approach or develop basic tips for approaching and engaging strangers on the benches to create an environmental portrait.

There is an art of composing images of urban structures juxtaposed against water and Center City offers settings that can be the vehicle for these lessons. There are row houses that can be photographed to tell a story from broader shots to close up detail. It is all in Center City and Phil will be there to point out the unending array of such examples.

Lots of people seem to hang up if our welcome recording comes on instead of a live voice, but we promise to return your message within a day or two if you leave one with your name and number.  It would be even better if you included your e mail address as well as the date and city of the class you are considering.  If leaving a voice mail message is not your thing, please email us at [email protected] or [email protected].
