Huizenga Park
Join our photo lessons at Huizenga Park, which is one of the excellent locales in the rotation of many Miami venues that offer terrific photo opportunities.
Venue Description:
Huizenga Park is a public riverfront park located along the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale’s historic district. With shaded green spaces, palm trees, riverfront walkways, and constant boat traffic, this venue offers a relaxed yet visually rich setting for learning photography outdoors.
The class begins within Huizenga Park, where shaded areas beneath trees allow your Digital Photo Academy instructor to review camera controls, exposure, and composition basics while minimizing harsh midday light. These shaded sections are well suited for demonstrating how to work with bright conditions by positioning subjects in even light and avoiding strong overhead shadows.
From there, the class may move along the riverfront walkway, where students can photograph the New River, boats passing through, and reflections on the water. This portion of the walk focuses on horizon placement, timing, and movement, with the instructor showing how to capture boats and rippling water while keeping the frame visually stable and well balanced.
As the walk continues, nearby pedestrian paths, railings, and benches provide clear opportunities to practice leading lines and foreground framing. Your instructor may demonstrate how to use these fixed elements to guide the viewer’s eye toward the river or surrounding city structures, and how small shifts in position can clean up a busy background.
Depending on activity levels and group interest, the class may also photograph adjacent restaurants, outdoor seating areas, and surrounding downtown buildings visible from the park’s perimeter. This section emphasizes scale, context, and environmental composition, helping students learn how to include people and architecture without cluttering the image.
Throughout the session, the instructor may pause in shaded or open areas to review images, answer questions, and adjust instruction based on the group’s pace. The walking distance is flexible, allowing the class to remain focused within the park and immediate riverfront while still offering a variety of scenes, subjects, and lighting conditions.
