Learn How To Use Your Digital Camera

John Doxey

John Doxey

John started experimenting with photography as a young man in his 20’s.  He enjoyed taking landscape photos while traveling all around California and other parts of the west.  These were the days of film, and without access to a darkroom and other equipment, he relied on getting the best shot possible directly through the lens of his camera. As digital photography progressed, John continued to develop his skills and now enjoys access to post processing tools that allow for even greater creative opportunities.

John’s love of photography intersected with his career in Corporate America while he was at Hewlett-Packard.  He worked in HP’s Home Imaging Division, where HP simultaneously developed their 1st digital camera, 1st photo printer, and 1st photographic film, slide, and print scanner. Experimenting with these products throughout their development cycle further drove John’s love of photography.

John’s passion for photography flourished thanks to the global travels he undertook as part of his responsibilities at HP. These journeys took him to various corners of the world, encompassing multiple cities in each country. His destinations included: China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Austria, Czechia, England, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Austria, Antigua, French Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, French Polynesia, throughout the Caribbean, as well as across Canada and the United States.

Teaching photography gives John the opportunity to bring his training experience together with his photography skills to pass on what he has learned to others. So since John’s work at HP required teaching courses in various technical areas, around the world, he has significant experience which taught him well as a photography instructor. One recent teaching experience took place at the Ocean Hills Country Club in San Diego, where he presented a slide show of images exclusively captured in San Diego, including not only his spectacular images but also his tips and techniques as well as explanations of photo composition for each image.

Now retired, John and his wife continue to indulge their passion for globetrotting and, of course, take photographs of all their adventures.

  1. I thought the class was great! John is a great teacher, and was very thorough. Not sure the camera I rented is the best for me to start with, as I had some difficulty navigating all the menus. He suggested I might try one with more button controls vs. screen menus, so I will be checking out some other cameras.

  2. The class was great. I enjoyed brushing up on the principles of photography. And learned some tecnics I’m definitely going to implement on my everyday shooting.

  3. I think this was a great start for me. Made me start thinking and I need more practice. I think I will plan on coming again next month.
Please let me know when the class is.
