Forty acres officially presented to the public in 1871, Washington Park is one of the oldest in Portland and a great place not only for photo ops but even just to get away from the hubbub of the city.

Until 1900, this locale was not popularly received due to its density of trees and brush as well as cougars! Around that time Charles M. Meyers transformed the park with roads and man made trails, landscaped areas, manicured hedges, flower gardens and to the delight of the public, a zoo. The tattered remnants of cable car trails, closed in the 1930’s, make one of many great photos, telling a tale of former glory.

Your instructor will demonstrate and supervise the art of creating dynamic images, with easy-to-learn composition strategies, that will lay a foundation for all future photo activities whether at a family gathering, a sporting event, a walk in the neighborhood or a lifetime travel experience.

Capture the skies with adjusting your camera or cell phone controls to the ever changing lighting from above, that shines down through the foliage.

The various trails offer a vehicle to create different perspectives of a myriad of potential environmental portraits of the hikers who you come upon or who are in your company. Different placements of the people/animals on the trail control one’s eye movement within the frame of the shot and each tell new stories. The direction of the trail also makes a difference. A straight path is one visual experience, a curving trail, another.

How about a lesson to learn the art of capturing patterns of the visual interplay of shadow and light on the scene? The sun behind the clouds is quite different than the sun, unobstructed by the clouds. The window of opportunity is fleeting but worth waiting for.

Scenes with no human presence can also offer a powerful narrative, an exhilarating visual experience, for example, when you focus on a vibrant flower that offers a bright spot of color against the green backdrop of trees or a pet dog romping amid the brush, owner just beyond the photo frame.

Concentrate on a texture theme by focusing closely on a single tree. You can almost feel the bark of the massive trunk.

Join the workshop and you will not only have an enjoyable experience of this centuries old oasis, but you will walk away with wonderful photographs worthy of framing for your living room walls.
