Reading Terminal Market

Reading Terminal Market

Join our photo lessons at the Reading Terminal Market, which is one of the excellent locales in the rotation of many Philadelphia venues that offer terrific photo opportunities.

Venue Description:

The Mission Statement for the Reading Terminal Market seems as if it was written with the photographer in mind. It reads:
“To preserve the architectural and historical character, and function, of the Reading Terminal Market as an urban farmers’ market. To provide a wide variety of produce, meat, fish, bakery and dairy products…to maintain an environment that recognizes and celebrates the diversity of our citizens and fosters their interaction.”

Be prepared to capture the old-world charm of the 82-year-old structure of Reading Terminal Market, inside and out, as well as even older buildings within walking distance. Inside, you’ll find picturesque environmental portraits of farmers selling their merchandise, as well as vibrant displays of fruits, produce, and other colorful items perfect for still-life photography, abstractions, and portfolio-worthy images.

Your instructor will share insights on dynamic ways to showcase the architecture and offer tips for making portraits that tell an elaborate story dating back to the late 17th century when farmers and fishermen first brought their goods from South Jersey.

Special for March: Philadelphia Flower Show

For the March 1st Composition in the Field session, we’ll take advantage of another exciting photography opportunity: the Philadelphia Flower Show, held right next door at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. As the nation’s largest and longest-running horticultural event, this show features stunning displays from world-class floral, garden, and landscape designers. It’s a fantastic chance to capture vibrant, intricate floral compositions, macro shots, and dynamic environmental portraits in a lush, colorful setting.

  • Hours: 10 AM – 8 PM daily (closes at 6 PM on March 9)
