Techniques Class: Nighttime Photography
Photographing the NYC Village Halloween Parade

The Village Halloween Parade is one of NYC’s most iconic community events, which happens annually. Fun, wacky and full of life, the Parade is a premier opportunity to practice shooting in a radically different environment.

Our instructor David Mark Erickson will lead you on this adventure.

The class is limited to 8 people max.
The class will take place in three (3) parts:

Part 1: Field Preparation & Review of Camera Basics
Tuesday, October 28th, 7:30 – 8:30PM
Online using Google Hangouts (see the bottom of the page for Google Hangout info)

In this part of the class we will get prepared and cover the basic logistics for what it will take to shoot at night, in a large and busy crowd. We will also cover what equipment you will need and, most importantly what lenses to bring/use!

We will then review some camera operation basics, including: using your camera in aperture and manual modes, using natural light and using flash.

As well, we will review some basic compositional techniques, including:
-Filling the Frame
-Depth of Field
-Rule of Thirds
-Motion Blur / Panning

Part 2: In the Field Photographing the Parade
Friday, October 31st from 6:30 – 9:30PM
227 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10014

We will gather in front of the NYFD Station at the corner of 6th Ave and W. Houston Street, about 3 blocks North of the start point for the parade. The parade march starts at 7pm and, as a class, we will shoot until 9:30PM. David will be working with each student on techniques and composition as the parade makes it’s way up 6th Ave.
