Sunsets on the waterfront are undebatably gorgeous, with bright colors that reflect off of clouds and the water below. Voinovich Bicentennial Park has a fantastic view of the North Coast Harbor and the Cleveland skyline, making it the perfect venue for a class that will teach you how to use your camera in the changing natural light provided by a beautiful sunset.

The class will begin with full daylight and go until after sunset, so your instructor will have ample time to explain the adjustments you will make as the light changes. He will also help you set up your tripods (encouraged for the class) and otherwise prepare. This class will obviously have a focus on light, but will also teach a series of tips and techniques you can learn to compose powerful images.

You will learn pointers for architectural photography, which you will apply to nearby buildings and the skyline across the water. One of these is called leading lines. Using lines in your photo will help your viewers’ eyes to move across the image with purpose. In the above image, viewers’ eyes travel up the stairs, then the vertical lines of the supports and bleacher separators, which eventually lead to the vividly blue sky and the wispy clouds draped artistically over the stadium.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum is also nearby and serves to cut an odd sillohuette against the darkening sky. Create visual interest by focusing on a bright guitar and allowing the interesting architecture to provide an eerie backdrop. Notice the added visual interest of the blurred flags, an effect created by varying shutter speed, a technique your instructor will teach you.

As the sky darkens, the city lights and reflective water result in even more opportunities for compelling images. Experiment with shutter speeds for smooth, velvety water or crisp, defined water. Learn the settings your camera provides for low light.

You never know when a lovelorn couple taking in the romantic scenery will provide the perfect photo opportunity for you! The boat, sunset, and portrait elements of this photo are perfectly placed and work well together, making for an effective and visually pleasing image.

As nighttime arrives, the city will provide the light for some final shots before you part ways, more confident in your ability as a photographer and armed with compositional tips and techniques you will use long after the class is over.

Lots of people seem to hang up if our welcome recording comes on instead of a live voice, but we promise to return your message within a day or two if you leave one with your name and number.  It would be even better if you included your e mail address as well as the date and city of the class you are considering.  If leaving a voice mail message is not your thing, please email us at [email protected] or [email protected].
