As a child, Kay Kenny knew she was destined to be an artist. After a BFA in illustration and
design, her work as a commercial artist led her to realize that her desire to capture her vision as a storyteller demanded a greater personal outlet.
She began her MFA program at Syracuse University as a printmaker then quickly turned to photography. Within a year, she was teaching color film photography as a TA, mastering the chemistries of film and non-silver images as well as teaching camera controls and composition. For over 25 years she has continued to teach these skills at NYU as well as ICP, including the digital camera and post-production software.
Her work is included in several textbooks on photography. She remains true to her storytelling vision, creating images that reflect a personal narrative while incorporating the graphic design skills she developed as an illustrator. In her rural night photography, she paints with flashlights, creating eerie scenes through long exposures. In her non-silver images she combines photographic images with drawings. The wide range of these different media encourages her to see the broad potential that photography holds for those who push the boundaries beyond point and shoot.
As an award-winning fine arts photographer, she received four NJ State Council grants, the Arthur Griffin legacy Award from the Griffin Museum among others. Solo exhibits of her work include several museums including Columbia, South America and Taiwan. Her work is included several notable collections.
