Matt Stock is an award-winning artist and educator based in Miami, Florida. His artwork is featured in numerous permanent collections including: the National Trust for Historic Spaces, the office of the Director of the National Parks Service Southeast Region in Atlanta, the Palm Beach Photographic Centre, the University of Tampa, and various private collections across the United States.
Specializing in experimental photographic processes, Matt’s area of expertise is in creating hyper-realistic nighttime photography using a method referred to as painting with light. Utilizing meticulous attention to detail, Matt and his team illuminate scenes on location using an array of light sources ranging from the Milky Way and full moon to specialized lighting tools, capturing hundreds of individual exposures over many hours. He then skillfully blends these elements digitally into a single luminous composition using Adobe Photoshop.
Matt actively collaborates with state and national parks, as well as non-profit organizations, to promote ecological conservation through his work. His dedication to environmental advocacy has led to notable appointments as Artist in Residence at: Biscayne National Park in 2012, the Palm Beach Photographic Centre in both 2015 and 2016, and the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center in 2020.
Matt’s expertise in night photography has earned him recognition in Shutterbug Magazine’s 2014 Expert Photography Techniques Magazine and a selection as one of 30 artists representing the National Park System’s Centennial Anniversary in 2016. His commitment to innovation was further acknowledged in 2019 when he received a Knight Arts Challenge Grant for his project, Abandoned Vehicles of the Everglades. In 2023, Matt graduated summa cum laude with an MFA in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
As a photography educator Matt has 17 years of full-time teaching experience at Ransom Everglades School – an elite college preparatory school – in Miami, Florida. As a teacher, Matt’s expertise extends well beyond his specialty in advanced photographic techniques. Over the years, he has garnered acclaim for his ability to effectively teach a broad spectrum of topics, including landscape, wildlife, nature, street, and portrait photography.
He also serves as photographic instructor at esteemed photography institutions around the United States such as Maine Media Workshops and the Palm Beach Photographic Centre, where he contributes to their renowned FOTOfusion photography festival.
Throughout his career, Matt has delivered keynote talks on his work at prestigious events such as Art Ft. Lauderdale, Art Palm Beach, TEDx Coconut Grove, and various online platforms, reaching audiences around the globe.
