Venue Description:

Located about 30 minutes from downtown Dallas, the Fort Worth Zoo is home to more than 7,000 native and exotic animals representing 542 species. Recognized as one of the top zoos in the nation, it offers photographers endless opportunities to capture wildlife up close—from majestic elephants and powerful big cats to delicate birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The zoo’s lush landscaping, winding pathways, and thoughtfully designed habitats also create dynamic opportunities for taking photos.

Your Digital Photo Academy instructor will guide you through a range of shooting styles and composition techniques to make the most of these subjects.

Practice focusing through fencing or glass to photograph the sharp eyes of a tiger or the textured skin of a crocodile, using a shallow depth of field to blur distractions in the background. Experiment with wide angles and leading lines when composing shots of elephants, rhinos, or giraffes to convey scale and movement. At ponds and shaded areas, explore reflections and diffused light to create tranquil, artistic compositions of flamingos, turtles, or waterfowl. Try adjusting shutter speed to freeze a bird mid-flight or slow it down to show the graceful motion of a swimming penguin or splashing water.

Each area of the zoo presents new textures, lighting conditions, and storytelling opportunities, making the Fort Worth Zoo an ideal location for photographers of all levels to practice, explore, and grow.
